Renting a yacht in Miami sounds simple: pick a boat, pick a day, get on board. In reality, the details decide whether the day is perfect or stressful. How many guests the yacht is allowed to carry, where you board, what is really included, and what happens if a storm rolls in at 2 PM.

This step by step guide explains exactly how to rent a yacht in Miami, from the first message to the moment you step back on the dock. It is the same process we follow for our own guests after 5 years of planning yacht days across South Florida.

The short answer: how to rent a yacht in Miami in 8 steps

  1. Choose the date, the time of day and how many hours you want.
  2. Count your guests, including children.
  3. Decide the experience: sandbar, skyline cruise, sunset dinner, celebration or a quiet family day.
  4. Choose a crewed yacht that is legally allowed to carry your group.
  5. Choose where to board: a marina or your villa dock.
  6. Confirm in writing what is included and what is extra.
  7. Sign the charter agreement and pay the deposit to a company you have verified.
  8. Get the final boarding details the day before: marina, slip, time, captain’s name.

Below we go through each step in detail. If you prefer to skip the planning, send us the date and group size and a real person replies within 15 minutes.

Step 1: choose the date, time and length

Miami is a year round yacht destination, but each season feels different. Winter brings dry air and busy weekends, summer brings warm water and afternoon storms, and the fall is quieter with more choice. Our month by month guide to the best time to charter a yacht in Miami covers this in detail.

Most charters run 4, 6 or 8 hours. Four hours is enough for a skyline cruise or a sunset. Six hours allows a sandbar stop and lunch. A full day lets you go further and slow down. Our Miami yacht day itinerary shows how a full day usually flows.

Step 2: count your guests

This is the step people get wrong most often. The number of guests a yacht may legally carry on a paid charter depends on how it is documented with the U.S. Coast Guard, not only on how big it looks. A large yacht with plenty of deck space may still have a low guest limit. Groups above that limit need a yacht with a Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection, or two yachts traveling together.

Always tell the company the exact number, including children and anyone joining later. We explain the rules in our guide to a yacht party for more than 13 guests and on our 20 guest yacht charter page.

Step 3: decide the experience

Step 4: choose the right yacht

Size changes the feel of the day. Smaller yachts are fast and fun. Mid size yachts add shade, a proper salon and more space to move. Large yachts and superyachts add multiple decks, more crew and room for a chef. Our guide to yacht sizes explains the differences, and top luxury yachts in Miami shows examples.

From our own fleet, popular choices include the 118′ Azimut, the 116′ Pershing, the 112′ WHS Marine, the 88′ Sirena, the 85′ Astondoa and the 68′ Azimut. We also offer Off-market yachts that are not listed online. For the biggest options, see new, large yachts in Miami and superyacht charter.

Step 5: choose where to board

Boarding points in Miami include marinas in Miami Beach, downtown and Brickell, Haulover, Sunny Isles and Fort Lauderdale. Where you board affects traffic, parking and how long it takes to reach open water. Read Miami yacht marinas: where you board and why it matters. If you are staying in a waterfront villa, the yacht may be able to pick you up at your own dock, see arriving by yacht at your Miami villa.

By city, see our pages for Miami Beach, Brickell, Sunny Isles, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Boca Raton and West Palm Beach.

Step 6: confirm what is included

Every yacht writes its terms a little differently. Ask for a written list that covers:

  • Captain and crew, and how many crew members.
  • Fuel for the planned route and hours.
  • Food, drinks and ice, or whether you bring your own.
  • A private chef on board, see yacht charter with a private chef.
  • Water toys such as paddle boards, floats or a jet ski, see yacht charter with a jet ski.
  • Decoration, music and any special setup.
  • The crew gratuity and any taxes or marina fees.
  • Transport to and from the marina, see our chauffeur service.

Our guide to what a luxury yacht charter in Miami includes goes line by line, and questions to ask before booking is a useful checklist. Rates are on request and depend on the yacht, the date and the hours. For how costs are built, read luxury yacht charter costs in Miami and how a group splits the cost.

Step 7: sign the agreement and pay safely

A proper charter agreement names the yacht, the date, the hours, the boarding point, the guest count, what is included, the deposit, the balance due date and the weather and cancellation terms. Pay a company you can verify: a local phone number that answers, a real address, reviews on Google and a track record. We have 92 Google reviews with a 5.0 rating, and LUXTERIA was featured in Forbes for its Miami concierge work.

Step 8: the day before and the day of the charter

The day before, you should receive the marina address, the slip or meeting point, the boarding time and the captain’s name and number. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early. Bring sunscreen that is gentle on the reef, sunglasses, a light layer for the ride home, and an ID if requested. Leave hard soled shoes in the car, since most yachts are barefoot on deck.

On board, the captain gives a short safety briefing. Listen to it, especially with children. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission publishes boating safety rules, and parts of Biscayne Bay have slow speed and manatee zones, which is why some stretches are cruised gently.

Weather: what really happens if it rains

Summer afternoons in Miami often bring short thunderstorms. Winter brings the occasional cold front with wind. The captain always decides on safety. In most cases the route moves to calmer water inside the bay or the start time shifts. During hurricane season, from June 1 to November 30, we watch the National Hurricane Center outlooks in the days before every charter. Agree the weather terms before you pay so there are no surprises.

Where to go: popular routes from Miami

  • Biscayne Bay and the bay islands: Star Island, Fisher Island and the Venetian Islands, with views of the skyline.
  • The Haulover Sandbar: the classic swim and music stop north of Bal Harbour.
  • Stiltsville and Key Biscayne: historic stilt houses in the waters of Biscayne National Park.
  • The Intracoastal: a calm cruise north past waterfront homes toward Fort Lauderdale.

Booking a yacht through a concierge vs directly

You can book a yacht directly with an operator, and for a simple cruise that can work well. A concierge adds value when the yacht is one part of a bigger plan: a villa, a chef, cars, a dinner reservation and a group of guests with different needs. We match the yacht to the group, confirm the legal guest limit, check the details in the agreement, arrange the chef and the driver, and stay available on the day. If you only need a yacht for tomorrow, our last minute yacht rental guide explains what is realistic. For discreet clients, see discreet yacht charter. Frequently asked questions

How do I rent a yacht in Miami?

Do I need a boating license to rent a yacht in Miami?

Not for a crewed charter. A licensed captain and crew operate the yacht. A license or boater education card matters only if you rent a boat to drive yourself.

How many people can go on a yacht charter in Miami?

It depends on the vessel’s Coast Guard status, not only its size. Many private yachts may carry a limited number of paying guests. Larger groups need a yacht with a Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection, or two yachts. Always ask the legal guest limit.

How far in advance should I book a yacht in Miami?

For holidays, Art Basel, the Miami Boat Show and New Year’s Eve, book as early as possible. For a normal weekday, a few days is often enough, and last minute charters are sometimes possible.

What is usually included in a Miami yacht charter?

Usually the yacht, captain, crew and fuel for a standard route. Food, drinks, a chef, water toys, decoration, the crew tip and transport to the marina are often extra. Ask for the full list in writing.

Where do yacht charters in Miami leave from?

Common boarding points are marinas in Miami Beach, downtown Miami and Brickell, Haulover, Sunny Isles and Fort Lauderdale. Some yachts can pick you up at a waterfront villa with a private dock.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The captain decides on safety. Usually the route moves to sheltered water, the time shifts, or the charter is rescheduled according to the weather terms in your agreement. Agree those terms before you pay.

What are Off-market yachts?

Off-market yachts are private yachts whose owners do not advertise them for charter. They are offered quietly through trusted local companies such as LUXTERIA.
