Staying on Star Island
What it is like
Star Island is a small man-made island in Biscayne Bay, reached from the MacArthur Causeway between downtown Miami and South Beach. It is almost entirely private estates set on one loop road, so it feels quiet and residential even though South Beach is only minutes away.
The homes
Most homes are large waterfront estates on deep lots, many with a private dock, a pool facing the bay and staff quarters. Architecture ranges from Mediterranean Revival houses to newer contemporary builds.
Privacy and access
There is one road onto the island and it is controlled by a guard gate, so only residents, staff and invited guests drive in. Mature landscaping and walls keep most homes out of view from the road.
By boat
Homes with a dock can board a yacht at the house. Government Cut, the channel to the open ocean, is a short run away, and the sandbars and anchorages of Biscayne Bay are close.
Getting around
- South Beach: about 5 to 10 minutes by car
- Downtown Miami and Brickell: about 10 to 15 minutes
- Miami International Airport (MIA): about 20 to 30 minutes
Typical drive times outside rush hour. Causeway traffic and bridge openings can add time.
