Staying in Miami Beach
What it is like
Miami Beach is a barrier island city across Biscayne Bay from Miami. South Beach has the Art Deco district, Ocean Drive and the busiest dining. Mid-Beach and North Beach are quieter, and the residential islands on the bay side are the most private.
The homes
Private homes are mostly on the bay side and the islands, such as the Venetian Islands, Sunset Islands and North Bay Road, many with docks and skyline views. The ocean side is mainly hotels and condominium towers.
Privacy and access
Some islands have guarded or single access roads. Elsewhere, hedges and gates screen most homes from the street.
By boat
Bay-side homes with a dock can board a yacht at the house. Government Cut in the south and Haulover Inlet in the north lead to the open ocean.
Getting around
- Downtown Miami and Brickell: about 15 to 25 minutes by car
- Miami International Airport (MIA): about 20 to 35 minutes, depending on the part of the island
- Fort Lauderdale airport (FLL): about 40 to 50 minutes from North Beach
Typical drive times outside rush hour. Causeway traffic and bridge openings can add time.
